The St. Louis Cardinals have a massive edge on the mound with Lance Lynn over Chris Capuano tonight. I’ll gladly side with the small road favorite in this one. The Cardinals (30-16) are clearly the better team over the Dodgers (19-26).

Lynn is 6-1 with a 3.27 ERA and 1.164 WHIP through nine starts this season. Capuano is 1-2 with a 5.49 ERA and 1.424 WHIP through four starts this season, including 1-2 with an 8.03 ERA and 1.865 WHIP in his last three home starts.

St. Louis is 9-1 (+8.5 Units) against the money line vs. an average bullpen whose ERA is 3.75 to 4.50 this season. The Cardinals are 80-38 (+27.6 Units) against the money line vs. teams outscored by opp by 0.5 or more runs/game on the season over the last 3 seasons. The Mets’ Jeremy Hefner is 0-1 with a 8.53 ERA (six earned runs in 6 1/3 innings) in his career against the Braves, spanning two appearances (one start). His last start against Atlanta was Sept. 8, when he went 2 2/3 innings and gave up five earned runs on eight hits. The Mets are 0-8 in Hefner’s starts this season, and 7-14 in his 21 career starts.

RECOMMENDATION: ATLANTA BRAVES (-156)

Joe Blanton (0-7, 6.62 ERA) toes the rubber for the visitors; Blanton gave up 11 hits and two walks over 4 1/3′s frames of work, striking out six and allowing four earned runs vs. the White Sox on Saturday. The beleaguered right-hander was lucky to earn the no-decision. With the expected return of ace Jered Weaver at the end of the month, Blanton’s time in the rotation is coming to an end. Blanton will be opposed by Ervin Santana (3-3, 2.77 ERA) who gave up two earned runs off four hits and three walks in seven frames vs. the A’s on Saturday, striking out five, unfortunate to get saddled with the 2-1 loss. So far the 30-year old has gone at least six frames in each of his eight starts this season though. Blanton’s mechanics are absolutely brutal right now; Santana is coming off one of his better starts of the year and will look to take advantage of this situation and beat his former team. I feel the talent discrepancy on the mound and the motivational factors working in favor of Santana warrants the home side a second look. How about you? What do you think? The Key: Houston has been a dead fade with Lyles on the mound. The Astros are 9-34 in Lyles’ last 43 starts, including 3-18 in his last 21 starts as an underdog of +151 to +200. 7 of Houston’s last 8 losses with Lyles on the mound have come by at least 2 runs. Shields, who has a 2.45 ERA on the season and a 1.50 ERA over his last 3 starts, has been a victim of poor run support. However, the Royals shouldn’t have much trouble getting to Lyles tonight. He has an 8.36 home ERA on the season.

Two teams experiencing disappointing seasons go at it on Wednesday afternoon as the Milwaukee Brewers host the Los Angeles Dodgers. Both teams check in with 18-26 records putting them in the cellars of their respective divisions. One bright spot for the Dodgers has been starting pitcher Hyun-Jin Ryu. The 26-year old Japanese import is 4-2 with a 3.42 ERA and 1.28 WHIP in nine starts this season so far. However, it appears as if the league might be catching up to the deceptive ways of Ryu. Over his last three starts he has walked 10 batters in 17 2/3 innings of work and his stuff hasn’t looked as sharp. He’ll face a very good Brewers lineup that hits left-handers hard, so I expect some runs to be scored against Ryu today. Wily Peralta gets the ball for the Brewers. Peralta has pitched much better than his 5.94 ERA indicates as his strand rate is one of the lowest in the league. He keeps the ball on the ground quite a bit, which should help him immensely in Miller Park where the ball can fly out with ease. The Dodgers are 14th in the National League in runs scored, ahead of only the lowly Marlins, so Peralta should fare well here. In the battle of underachievers, I like the Brewers to get the job done at home.

Adam Wainwright has been nothing short of spectacular for the Cardinals this season. In 9 starts he has posted a 2.51 ERA and averages 7.2 innings per start. In his career against San Diego Wainwright has a 0.97 ERA and a 0.946 WHIP. The Cardinals have a .273 batting average against right handed starters and they average 5.1 runs in those games so run support will not be an issue today.

San Diego will have Edinson Volquez getting the start today. Volquez has a 5.55 ERA and has allowed 53 hits this season in a total of 48.7 innings pitched. His numbers are below average across the board and St Louis will be one of the best hitting teams he has faced this season. Run support for the Padres should be a major issue as they post a .246 batting average this season.

New York’s Matt Harvey is drawing most of the rookie attention. Harvey has been sensational, but Fernandez is a rising star, too. As bad as Miami is, Fernandez should not open as a home ‘dog to Tyler Cloyd and a cold Phillies team.

Fernandez is 2-0 with a 2.25 ERA in his last three starts with 21 strikeouts in 20 innings during this span. Fernandez’s hot streak began against the Phillies in Citizens Park, a much easier stadium to hit in. He beat the Phillies, 2-0, giving up just one hit in seven innings with nine strikeouts. This was the second time Fernandez faced the Phillies. He held them to two hits in six scoreless innings on April 13.

So Philadelphia has yet to score on Fernandez in 13 innings getting just three hits and striking out 14 times against him. The Phillies are not in good form either being outscored, 17-4, in their last three games.

Miami has the worst offense in the league, but the Phillies are 27th in runs averaging just 3.4 per game. It’s too much to expect of Cloyd, a fill-in starter, to keep pace with Fernandez. Cloyd has a 4.58 career ERA in seven big league starts.
